Your world

Every country starts grey. Unlock them one round at a time.

Your progress

Each country counts three times, once per difficulty.

How the game works

  1. Pick a difficulty

Easy, Medium and Hard are three separate runs at the whole world. A country cleared on Easy is still locked on the other two.

  2. Get a country you have not unlocked

Press Play and the game picks one at random from what is still locked at that level, so you never repeat work you have already done.

  3. Answer six questions

The first is always finding it on the world map. The other five are drawn fresh each round, so replaying a country never gives you the same set twice.

  4. Score five and it lights up

Five out of six unlocks the country and colours it in. Four or less costs you nothing, you just try again.

What you learn

Questions are generated from a country database, not written by hand, so the pool is deep.

Browse the atlas

Across the three levels the game covers capitals, national flags, land borders, populations, land areas, currencies, main languages, largest cities, highest mountains, major rivers and independence years, plus finding every country on an interactive world map.

Easy stays on the basics. Medium moves to borders, cities and figures. Hard drops flags entirely and asks for independence years, peak elevations, population density, border counts and direct comparisons between neighbouring countries.

If you would rather study first, the world atlas lists all 195 countries by continent with the same facts laid out plainly. The game itself keeps a country's details hidden until you have unlocked it.

Common questions

How do you unlock a country?

You answer six questions about it and get at least five right. The first question is always locating the country on the world map, and the other five are drawn at random from a pool for that difficulty. Score four or less and nothing is lost, you just try again with a freshly shuffled round.

How many countries are in the game?

195, which is the 193 United Nations member states plus Vatican City and Palestine. Each one has to be cleared separately on Easy, Medium and Hard, so there are 585 unlocks in total.

What is the difference between the three difficulties?

Easy asks for capitals, flags, continents, currencies and languages, and gives you a 900 km tolerance when you click the map. Medium moves to borders, major cities, populations, areas, rivers and highest points, with a 500 km tolerance. Hard drops flags entirely and asks for independence years, peak elevations, population density, border counts and direct comparisons between nearby countries, with a 300 km tolerance.

Is Unlock Our World free?

Yes. It runs entirely in your browser, there is no account, no sign up and no payment. Your progress is stored locally in that browser.

Is my progress saved?

Yes, in your browser's local storage. It survives a refresh and a restart, but it does not follow you to another device or another browser, and clearing your site data removes it. You can wipe it deliberately from Settings.

Can I study the countries before playing?

Yes. The atlas lists every country grouped by continent, with its capital, flag, population, area, currency, main language and land borders. The game itself keeps a country's facts hidden until you unlock it.
